Why role matters more than headline stats
Role clarity is the cheapest, most useful read in cricket analysis. The same headline run total can mean different things for a top-order anchor, a middle-order consolidator or a death-overs aggressor. Reading the role tells you what the runs are worth.
1Batting slot
Slot one and two see powerplay conditions and the new ball. Slot four and five face death overs and spin. Reading the slot reads the role.
2Bowling phase
Powerplay, middle overs, death overs — three different jobs in the same XI. The phase a bowler owns is more predictive than the wickets total.
3Fielding role
Catches and run-outs add up over a contest. Inner ring saves runs, boundary ring saves boundaries. We tag both.
4Workload
Format rotation, mid-series rest and impact-player slots alter weekly workload. We track overs and balls faced over the last thirty days.
5Matchup
Same role, different matchup. Left-right wrist-spin, off-pace seam, pace-off cutters — the venue cue tells us which matchup rewards which player.
